The Queer Department deals with the issues of different groups that are disadvantaged because of their non-conformity to societal norms. We primarily deal with gender, homo- and bisexuality, trans, intersex, ableism, racism and others. We offer a range of events open to all students and are trying to facilitate contact between the respective groups. For example, at the regular “Queer & Beer” get-together, where bisexual, lesbian, gay, trans, and inter students meet up.
Throughout the year, our department organises various screenings and presentations that deal with individual topics and discuss them under the queer umbrella. We also offer practical group workshops where you can for example learn to become a Drag King/Boy or Queen in a group. At our “Übergalaktisch” Queer Party, drag, performance, queerness and reality all come together in a special space.
Behind all this is the idea of a more open, just society that imposes fewer norms on your personality. A society in which you are free to express your gender, physicality and form of love in the way that feels right to you. One in which you don’t have to be ashamed of who you are, because everyone is different and that’s beautiful. Are you curious? Find out more about our events on our website.
If you have any questions, just write an email or drop by during our office hours. The same applies if you would like to join our team. We are always happy to welcome new people, ideas and suggestions!
Due to the pandemic situation, as well as to guarantee we can meet safely in person for as long as possible, all in person meet-ups of AK Queer will be subject to 2G*. This means you can only attend if you are cured of COVID, vaccinated, or tested as well as having a good reason for not being vaccinated like an allergy to the vaccine. If you are the latter, please reach out to me beforehand, either via mail or during my office hours.
Queer & Beer and Queer Games Night will probably also require a mandatory RSVP to allow us to know how many people will attend and prepare accordingly.
My office hours will remain 3G (vaccinated, cured or tested).
Queer Games Night on december 8th will take place with mandatory RSVP due to the Omikron mutation. If you’d like to come please mail me (at firstname.lastname@example.org) your name and how many people you’ll bring with, before december 7th 24:00.
Study Cybermobbing and Mobbing
Currently, a study is underway on the impact of cyberbullying and bullying on those affected, what the assumed reasons for cyberbullying are, what role gender-nonconforming behavior and sexual orientation play.
“To approach these questions, we put together a short online questionnaire that should take no more than five to ten minutes to complete. We would like to survey adolescents and young adults between 16-21 years old, of different gender and sexual orientation.
Everyone who wants to, between 16-21 years, can participate, regardless of whether such an experience comes directly to their mind. The point is to gather as many diverse impressions and experiences as possible. Of course, the survey can be canceled at any time and without giving reasons, and all data will be treated anonymously!”
Students of Psychology or Teaching can earn test subject hours.
Every Monday between 11:30am and 12:30pm we meet in the canteen (Mensa) to have lunch together and enjoy the nice queer company. If you are only able to stay until noon or may not join us until after noon, you are still welcome, and if you feel like staying longer, no one will rush you out of the cafeteria before 2:15pm.
Queer & Beer
Our regulars’ table Queer & Beer is a safe space for LGBTIQ* students that gives them the opportunity to get to know like-minded people from the university in an uncomplicated way. At our regulars’ tables we gather in a cosy atmosphere and chat about whatever is on our minds.
We meet every fourth Thursday of the month at 7pm, this time in Synop.
Come and drop by! We look forward to seeing you!
Queer Games Night
In addition to Queer & Beer, every second Wednesday of the month beginning at 7pm we host our ‘Queer Games Night’ at Zing, where we play a few games in a relaxed atmosphere. We provide a basic set of games, but you feel free to bring some of your own.
Every first Wednesday of the month, starting at 4pm, the queer café takes place in the AStA-Freiraum. On one hand, the Queer Café is meant to be a safe space where everybody can talk about their experiences as a queer person at university.
On the other hand, the Queer Café provides an opportunity to further educate oneself. For example, we deal with the situation of queer people in other countries, but also with current queer politics in Germany. However, you needn’t worry if you’re not a politics nerd. We work on all topics together and everyone can bring in their own experiences.
‘Queergelesen’ is the queer book club that we’ve launched in collaboration with the Women’s Library (‘FrauenGenderBibliothek’). The club meets on the third Wednesday of every month starting at 7:30pm at the ‘FrauenGenderBibliothek Saar’. The books are always selected one week in advance through e-mail voting. To register, please send an e-mail either to the Women’s Library or to me, or just drop by!
The AK TNI (working group Trans – Nonbinary – Inter) is a safe space and networking opportunity for all trans, non-binary, inter or agender people as well as for those wondering if they might be. We meet every third Tuesday of the month, location and time are confidential to ensure that the safe space remains safe. If you are interested, please e-mail me, call me or speak to me in person.
The Queer Working Group (AK Queer) is committed to ensuring that LGBTIQ* students are seen and heard at university. It is attached to the Queer Department (Queer Referat) of the AStA. There are regular events such as the regulars’ table ‘Queer & Beer’ or the ‘Queer Games Night’, but also lectures, bar camps and similar one-time events. All our activities as well as other interesting queer events are announced on our social media (Instagram and Facebook) and on our Discord server. For the sake of protection against bots and trolls, there is no public invite link to the latter, so if you want to join, please write me an e-mail, or talk to me or any other speaker’s council member at one of our meetings.
